Parenting Workshop - The Gratitude Response
: The Gratitude Response is a way of awakening the feeling of appreciation, gratitude, compassion and the desire to care for each other's needs. I have found the natural generosity of children can be awakened, sustained and nourished through practices like the Gratitude Response. So many parents struggle with how to work with or discipline their kids in such a way that they learn proper values and that their homes are places of harmony and cooperation. Often the strategies that we employ end up bringing us the opposite results. The traditional thinking is that strong boundaries and clear expectations, combined with rewards for positive behavior and consequences for undesirable behavior, will produce the kind of environment that we want in our homes. Unfortunately that is rarely ever the case. Rewards and punishment are not effective strategies in producing long term harmony and cooperation or deep relationships where people care about each other's needs. In fact, when we engage with our children (or anyone), regularly from the punishment/reward mindset, it degrades the relationship they have with us and degrades the relationship they have with themselves. The Gratitude Response is a whole different way of responding to our children in difficult moments, and even in positive moments, so that they have a different experience of us.Throughout the day we engage with our kids many times. Every time we do we inform them about the nature of our relationship, about our intentions, our desires, their worth/value, their boundaries and about how we see them. The Gratitude Response, when practiced regularly, creates for children an environment and relationship in which they can relax into you, trust your guidance and be open to learning with you. In this workshop, we are going to look at the Gratitude Response in detail, the theory behind how it works and what enhances and obstructs it, as well as how to respond to your children in different situations.
